Sensitive Tooth

Overview

Sensitive teeth can be a common dental problem, causing discomfort or pain in the teeth when exposed to certain stimuli, such as hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks, or even cold air. This condition can affect anyone, but it is more common in people aged 20 to 40 years.

If left untreated, tooth sensitivity can lead to other dental problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. It can also affect your quality of life by causing pain or discomfort when eating, drinking, or speaking.

Causes

There are many factors that can cause tooth sensitivity, including:

  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Gum disease or periodontitis
  • Worn tooth enamel or exposed roots
  • Tooth grinding or clenching
  • Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush
  • Acidic foods and drinks
  • Tooth whitening products
  • Dental procedures such as teeth cleaning, root canal treatment, or tooth extraction

Symptoms

The most common symptom of sensitive teeth is a sharp pain or discomfort in the teeth when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain when brushing or flossing
  • Pain when breathing in cold air
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Headaches

Diagnosis

To diagnose sensitive teeth, our dentist will examine your teeth and ask about your symptoms. They may also perform tests, such as tapping the teeth with a dental instrument or applying hot or cold air or liquids to the teeth.

Treatment

Treatment for sensitive teeth depends on the underlying cause. Some common treatments include:

  • Desensitizing toothpaste containing fluoride or potassium nitrate
  • Fluoride gel or varnish applied to the teeth by a dentist
  • Dental bonding or sealing to cover exposed roots
  • Gum graft surgery to cover exposed roots
  • Root canal treatment to treat a damaged or infected tooth

Prevention

To prevent sensitive teeth, you can:

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between teeth
  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks
  • Use a mouthguard if you grind your teeth
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
